A hand-carved wooden headrest from the Yoruba people of West Africa, dating to the 20th century. Presented on a modern lucite display base. From a private collection. Dimensions: 10.75"h x 32.5"d x 10"d. In very good condition.
The sculptural form depicts a stylized leopard with an elongated body, open mouth, and intricately incised details along the surface. The animal’s back forms the gently curved resting platform, symbolizing strength and protection. Retaining traces of its original dark patina with contrasting light pigment highlights, the piece reflects the Yoruba tradition of combining functional design with symbolic artistry.
