Hand signed on the lower right with an “A/P” (artist’s proof) annotation on the lower right. From the edition of 100. Printed by Ives-Sillman, New Haven, with blind stamp, and published by Abrams Original Editions, New York., 1973. The composition reflects de Kooning’s continued engagement with the figure, characterized by energetic mark-making and layered contour drawing. This work represents a documented proof impression by a central figure of Abstract Expressionism and relates to de Kooning’s sustained exploration of the female form.Provenance: From a private estate in Birmingham, MI; originally acquired from Arnold Klein Gallery in Royal Oak, Michigan. Full condition reports available upon request.Willem de Kooning (1904–1997) was a leading figure of Abstract Expressionism and a founding member of the New York School. Born in Rotterdam, he immigrated to the United States in 1926 and became a central presence in postwar American art. De Kooning received numerous honors during his lifetime, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964. He represented the United States at the Venice Biennale and was the subject of major retrospectives at institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. In 1986, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts. His work is held in major museum collections worldwide and continues to be widely exhibited and studied.2556
