Born in New York City, Shapiro studied at the Pratt Institute and became known for his meditative compositions that merged geometric abstraction with spiritual and philosophical influences drawn from Zen Buddhism and ancient cultures. His work was exhibited internationally and included in the collections of major institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In addition to his visual art practice, Shapiro was an accomplished writer and critic whose interdisciplinary approach helped establish him as an influential figure in late 20th-century contemporary art.
