Vintage 1930s Gilbert Rohde for Troy Sunshade Company Art Deco Cream Vinyl Sofa
A vintage Gilbert Rohde for Troy Sunshade art deco sofa. This amazing vintage sofa is designed by Gilbert Rohde, and produced sometime in the 1930s. Rohde was a pioneer of modern design, setting the stage for the future of mid century modern design and art. This sofa is manufactured by the Troy Sunshade Company, a common producer of early Gilbert Rohde designs. This sofa features a tubular chrome frame design with upholstered arm cushions. The frame supports a double-layered seat cushion design with three back cushions. All nine cushions are fully independent and removable. The seat cushions all feature small brass breathing holes for airflow. Each cushions is upholstered in a cream/off-white vinyl material with black piping around the edges. This whole sofa is in good vintage condition for its age. It measures 32 inches tall, 69 inches long, and 35 inches deep. It has a seat height of 17 inches, a seat width of 65 inches, a seat depth of 22 inches, a back height of 18 inches, and an arm height of 4.5 inches. Gilbert Rohde (1894-1944) was a pioneering American industrial designer who played a crucial role in shaping modern furniture design in the United States. Best known for his transformative work with Herman Miller in the 1930s and early 1940s, Rohde moved American design away from traditional revival styles toward streamlined, functional modernism influenced by the Bauhaus and European avant-garde. Rohde’s work has since been exhibited at major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, and the Wolfsonian–FIU, which holds a significant collection of his furnishings.
