Description

A surrealist etching on paper titled “Les Chants de Maldoror (The Songs of Maldoror)” by Salvador Dali. Hand signed in pencil on the lower right with an annotation of 14/100 on the lower left. Published by Albert Skira, Paris in 1934. Created as part of Dali’s celebrated illustrated suite for Comte de Lautréamont’s surrealist literary masterpiece, the composition presents a spindly, hallucinatory figure poised in a tense, theatrical stance while contemplating a severed head held in its outstretched hand. Rendered with delicate yet nervous linearity, the etching combines precise draftsmanship with dreamlike distortion, emphasizing psychological unease and uncanny symbolism. The sparse setting heightens the figure’s spectral presence and reflects Dali’s early mastery of Surrealist imagery, where metamorphosis, desire, and menace converge. This work is especially significant as part of one of the defining print portfolios of Dali’s formative Surrealist period. From a private collection; previously acquired through Minotaur Galleries. Dimensions: 23.25”h x 19.25”w x 1”d (framed). In very good condition.
