Mixed media drawing on paper titled "Leonardo’s Muses" by artist Ruth Weisberg. Signed and dated 1987 along the bottom. The composition depicts two closely positioned female figures rendered in a classical style, shown in soft profile and three-quarter view. The figures are drawn with layered lines and tonal shading in brown and gray hues, referencing Renaissance-inspired portraiture. An example of contemporary American drawing and figurative art influenced by historical sources.
Provenance: From a private collection. Originally acquired from Alice Simsar Gallery in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Gallery tag on verso. Dimensions: 25.5"h x 31.5"w x 1.5"d (framed). In very good condition.
Ruth Weisberg (b. 1942) is an American artist and educator known for figurative work addressing history, identity, and the human figure. She serves as Professor of Fine Arts at the University of Southern California and is the former dean of the USC Roski School of Art and Design. Weisberg earned both her BFA and MFA from the University of Michigan. Her work has been presented in more than 70 solo exhibitions, including shows at the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena and the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, and in over 190 group exhibitions worldwide. Her work has been exhibited at major institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Weisberg’s work is held in more than 60 museum collections, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
