Printed with French inscriptions along the lower margin reading “Dessiné par Rembrandt” and “Gravé par Alphonse Leroy.” This monochromatic composition depicts an elderly bearded man wearing a broad-brimmed hat, rendered with dramatic tonal contrast and expressive shading characteristic of Rembrandt’s portrait studies. Leroy’s interpretation faithfully captures the atmospheric depth and textured linework associated with the original Baroque master while translating it through the refined aquatint technique popular in the 19th century.
