Piero Fornasetti Maschere Italiane Commedia dell’Arte 1950s Ceramic Tiles Framed
Set of four ceramic tiles from the Maschere Italiane series designed by Italian artist and designer Piero Fornasetti in the 1950s. Each tile depicts a different character from the traditional Italian Commedia dell’Arte theater, illustrated with stylized costume and expressive gesture. The figures are rendered in black linework with hand-colored accents including blue, yellow, and red, set against a light ground. The characters shown include Brighella, Pantalone, Scaramouche, and Arlecchino, each identified by name within the design.
Fornasetti produced a wide range of decorative objects using printed imagery applied to ceramics, frequently referencing classical themes, theater, and Italian cultural history. The Maschere Italiane series reflects his interest in theatrical costume and graphic storytelling through simplified line and pattern. Tiles from this series are recognized examples of mid-century Italian decorative design and are sought after by collectors of Fornasetti studio works and modern Italian ceramics.
