Description

A modern lithograph on paper titled “Equilibriste sur Cheval Acrobat on a Horse” by Marc Chagall. Hand signed in pencil on the lower right with an annotation of 12/20 on the lower left. Published in 1956. Referenced in Mourlot as catalog raisonné no. 172. The composition presents Chagall’s beloved circus imagery through a lyrical, highly simplified arrangement of an acrobat poised atop a horse, surrounded by floating figures, delicate linear arabesques, and whimsical decorative motifs. Executed primarily in rich black ink against a pale ground, the work emphasizes gesture, movement, and balance through sweeping curves, spontaneous lines, and airy negative space. The elegant economy of form and playful theatrical subject matter exemplify Chagall’s mastery of lithography and his enduring fascination with performers, fantasy, and poetic motion. From a private collection; previously acquired through Christie’s London in 1988. Dimensions: 41”h x 34”w x 2”d (framed). In very good condition.
