M. Evelyn McCormick (1862-1948) - Untitled (Mykonos, Greece) Signed Watercolor
An Impressionist watercolor on paper capturing the iconic whitewashed windmills of Mykonos, Greece by American artist M. Evelyn McCormick (1862-1948). Hand signed lower left. McCormick bathes the island architecture and terraced hillside in warm light, using fluid brushstrokes and soft tonal transitions to convey the tranquil atmosphere. Reflections ripple gently across the foreground harbor, guiding the eye to the stepped path and trio of cylindrical windmills that punctuate the scene. A noted American "bohemian," McCormick rejected Victorian convention, following her lover to Paris and Monet's Giverny in 1889, painting across Europe to sustain an adventurous livelihood. Her spirited independence and affinity for Mediterranean light shaped a distinctive contribution to American Impressionism.
Provenance: From the distinguished collection of architect and art dealer Michael Thomas Sr., a respected figure in the Metro Detroit art and design community. Thomas was the founder and proprietor of the Metro Collection, a globally recognized gallery with an extensive online presence and international clientele. Dimensions: 23"h x 25"w x 1" (framed).
