Description

Attributed to renowned American painter and printmaker John French Sloan (1871-1951), this vibrant oil painting on board captures a quiet moment of mid-20th-century everyday life. Rendered in a bold yet intimate style, the composition depicts a woman in a vivid yellow dress seated beneath a vintage salon hair dryer, her eyes closed in serene repose. Sloan, a founding member of the Ashcan School, was celebrated for his empathetic portrayals of urban working-class subjects and his mastery in capturing candid, human moments. Housed in a period gilt frame with a nameplate bearing the artist's dates, this work reflects the modern American Social Realist sensibility of the era, balancing expressive color with narrative depth.

Provenance: From the distinguished collection of architect and art dealer Michael Thomas Sr., a respected figure in the Metro Detroit art and design community. Thomas was the founder and proprietor of the Metro Collection, a globally recognized gallery with an extensive online presence and international clientele. Dimensions: 32.5"h x 28.5"w x 1.5" (framed). In very good vintage condition; verso appears to have slight water staining. Full condition reports are available upon request.
