James Jacques Tissot (French, 1836–1902) was a highly successful painter and printmaker celebrated for his refined depictions of modern life in Paris and London. A prominent exhibitor at the Paris Salon, he earned early acclaim for his meticulous technique and fashionable subject matter. After relocating to London in 1871, he achieved international success, exhibiting at the Royal Academy and becoming one of the most sought-after society painters of his time. In the 1880s, Tissot gained further distinction for his masterful etchings and later for his ambitious illustrated series on the Life of Christ, which was widely exhibited in Europe and the United States to critical acclaim. Today, his works are held in major museum collections worldwide, including the Musée d’Orsay, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Tate, affirming his lasting importance in 19th-century European art.
