Eugène Carrière (1849–1906) was a French Symbolist painter and printmaker known for his tonal, atmospheric compositions. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon and later at the Salon d’Automne, where he became an influential figure among younger artists. Carrière was appointed professor at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and was named a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur in 1890. His work was widely exhibited internationally, including at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, and is held today in major museum collections such as the Musée d’Orsay, Paris; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and the Art Institute of Chicago.
