Description

Original lithograph poster created for the Metallurgy Pavilion of the Exposition Universelle, Paris, 1900. The composition depicts a foundry worker raising a tool overhead, rendered in Carrière’s characteristic tonal style with soft modeling and atmospheric contrasts. Printed by Chaix and Malherbe, Paris, the work reflects the artist’s Symbolist-influenced approach and his interest in expressive figuration. Created for one of the major international exhibitions of the late 19th century, the poster represents an intersection of fine art and industrial modernity at the turn of the century. An example of early 20th-century French exhibition poster design by a recognized Symbolist painter. From a private collection. Dimensions: 58”h x 41”w x 1.5”d (framed) / 51”h x 35”w (image). In very good vintage condition, consistent with age. The sheet appears clean. Full condition reports available upon request. Eugène Carrière (1849–1906) was a French Symbolist painter and printmaker known for his tonal, atmospheric compositions. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon and later at the Salon d’Automne, where he became an influential figure among younger artists. Carrière was appointed professor at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and was named a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur in 1890. His work was widely exhibited internationally, including at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, and is held today in major museum collections such as the Musée d’Orsay, Paris; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and the Art Institute of Chicago.
