Description
A lithograph on cut and raised paper titled “Shoe String” by Elizabeth Murray. Hand signed in pencil on the lower right with an annotation of 18/70 on the lower left. Published and printed by Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE), West Islip, New York, 1993. This work exemplifies Murray’s exploration of shaped formats and dimensional surface. The composition features biomorphic, interlocking forms rendered in layered color with energetic, gestural marks surrounding the central imagery. Murray’s prints from this period reflect her continued investigation of fragmentation, abstraction, and object-based imagery, making this work representative of her mature graphic practice.Provenance: From the personal collection of Stephen Kasle, son of Detroit art dealer Gertrude Kasle, founder of the Gertrude Kasle Gallery, which played a significant role in the development of Detroit’s modern and avant-garde art scene during the 1960s and 1970s.Dimensions: 43.75”h x 36.5”w x 6.5”d (framed). Very good overall condition. Full condition report available upon request.Elizabeth Murray (1940–2007) was a leading figure in postwar American painting, known for expanding the language of abstraction through shaped canvases and dynamic, cartoon-inflected forms. She received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA from Mills College. Murray represented the United States at the 41st Venice Biennale in 1984 and was the subject of a major mid-career retrospective organized by The Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 2006—the first retrospective at MoMA dedicated to a living female artist. She was awarded a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 1999 and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Her work is held in major museum collections worldwide, including The Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
