Hand signed in pencil, dated, and annotated 12/100 on the lower right. Printed by Tadashi Toda at the Shi-un-do Print Shop in Kyoto and published by Crown Point Press, the work reflects a significant cross-cultural collaboration between contemporary American postmodernism and historic Japanese woodblock printing traditions. haracteristic of David Salle’s postmodern visual language, the composition layers multiple perspectives and fragmented imagery within a single pictorial space. A reclining female figure, enlarged scissors, and glimpses of an interior setting merge through expressive linear passages and translucent fields of muted pink, gray, blue, and brown. Salle’s use of overlapping imagery creates a cinematic, almost double-exposed effect in which confrontational figuration coexists with elusive narrative fragments, encouraging the viewer to continuously shift between immediate visual impact and psychological interpretation. David Salle (b. 1952) is an influential American painter, printmaker, and stage designer associated with the Pictures Generation and the rise of postmodern art in the 1980s. Known for his layered compositions that combine fragmented imagery, popular culture, art history, and cinematic references, Salle studied under John Baldessari at the California Institute of the Arts. His work has been exhibited internationally at major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Salle represented the United States at the 1984 Venice Biennale and remains recognized as one of the defining figures of contemporary American postmodern painting.
