A set of 3 terracotta hearth tiles from Antwerp, Belgium, circa 16th-17th century, are evocative examples of Northern European domestic decorative arts. Each rectangular tile is molded in low relief, featuring narrative or allegorical scenes rendered with charming simplicity: figures in pastoral or courtly settings, foliage, and possibly mythological or moralizing imagery. Originally installed around hearths, such tiles served both functional and aesthetic purposes, protecting walls from heat while enriching interiors with visual storytelling. Antwerp, a major artistic and commercial center during this period, was known for producing finely crafted architectural ceramics, often influenced by Renaissance motifs.
