A modernist etching with aquatint on paper titled âYellow Eyeâ by Alistair Grant. Hand signed in pencil on the lower right with an annotation 11/50 on the lower left. Published in 1968. An abstract surreal composition that is inspired by modern artists such as Joan Miro, Paul Klee, and Henry Moore. The forms and shapes employed become visual vocabulary, serving as ciphers of existing forms. Against vibrant and strongly colored backgrounds, these shapes intertwine, inviting interpretation as landscapes. Grantâs approach to capturing a sense of place echoes the artistic spirit of the St. Ives artists, while maintaining a distinct and unique character that sets his work apart. Provenance: London Arts Group, Detroit. Dimensions: 23.25âh x 15âw (unframed). In very good vintage condition.
Alistair Grant (1925-1997) is best known as a printmaker and his entire teaching career was spent in the printmaking department at the Royal College of Art. Grant was at the top of his profession and a groundbreaker in his explorations of mixed media techniques. One could describe him as a French reflection of the St. Ives School where painters explored the landscape in similar fashion, as they still do. Grant was a supreme colorist. His artwork can be found in several important private and public collections around the world.
