Han Dynasty Style Green-Glazed Pottery House (Mingqi), 20th Century
Green-glazed earthenware model of a house in the style of the Han dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE). Architectural models such as this were produced as mingqi, or burial objects, and placed in tombs to provide a symbolic dwelling for the deceased in the afterlife. The structure features a pitched roof with overhanging eaves and a rectangular body with a front opening revealing an interior shelf. The exterior is covered in a mottled green glaze typical of low-fired, lead-based Han-style ceramics, with areas of glaze loss and surface wear. The house is raised on molded supports, incorporating stylized animal-form elements at the base. A 20th-century example after Han dynasty prototypes, sought-after by collectors of Chinese funerary objects and early ceramic forms.Provenance: Private Estate in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan.
