Han Dynasty Style Green-Glazed Granary Jar (Mingqi), 20th Century
Green-glazed earthenware granary jar in the style of Eastern Han dynasty (25–220 CE) tomb pottery. This type of vessel, known as mingqi, was created for burial and placed in tombs to provide for the deceased in the afterlife. Granary jars symbolized sustenance and stability, reflecting Han funerary practices. The jar features a cylindrical body with incised banding and is raised on three molded supports. It retains its domed lid, a component often missing from excavated examples. The surface is covered in a mottled olive-green glaze consistent with low-fired, lead-based glazes associated with Han-style wares. Areas of glaze loss and surface wear are present. A 20th-century example after ancient prototypes, sought-after by collectors of Chinese ceramics and Han-style tomb figures.Provenance: Private Estate in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan.
