Description
An antique Japanese woodcut titled “Kabuki Theatre (Triptych)” by Utagawa Kunisada, also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III. Circa 1850. A dramatic scene from Kanadehon Chūshingura (also known as the Chūshingura or Tale of the 47 Ronin) – a Kabuki theater performance. Rendered in vibrant colors with intricate detailing, the composition features three central characters: a kneeling woman in elaborate kimono, a sword-drawing samurai mid-motion, and a third commanding figure gesturing authoritatively. Framed by traditional Japanese architecture and pine trees, the print exemplifies Kunisada’s mastery in portraying theatrical intensity, costume elegance, and storytelling through Ukiyo-e. A rare and dynamic example of Edo-period Kabuki woodblock art.
Provenance: From the collection of Northwood University in Midland, Michigan; proceeds of the sale will go towards the University’s endowment. Dimensions: 17”h x 28”w x 1”d (framed). In very good vintage condition. Full condition reports are available upon request.
Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III, 1786–1865) was one of the most prolific and celebrated ukiyo-e (woodblock print) artists of Japan’s Edo period. A student of Utagawa Toyokuni I, he later inherited his master's name and became known as Toyokuni III. Kunisada gained early fame for his portraits of Kabuki actors (yakusha-e) and quickly became the dominant figure in the Utagawa school. His vibrant and theatrical style, coupled with innovative compositions, made him immensely popular during his lifetime—often outselling contemporaries like Hokusai and Hiroshige. In addition to actor prints, Kunisada created bijin-ga (images of beautiful women), historical scenes, and book illustrations. His works are held in major museum collections worldwide, including the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
