Robert Motherwell (1915-1991) was part of the New York School in the late 1940's and coined the term for the group of Abstract Expressionist artists working together in Manhattan such as Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko. Motherwell's first one-man show was at Peggy Guggenheim in 1944 and in the same year the MoMA was the first museum to purchase one of his paintings. In the 1950's he taught painting and his teachings influenced Cy Twombly, Robert Rauschenberg, and Kenneth Noland. He was also married to Helen Frankenthaler. Motherwell has been featured in several exhibitions at major museums globally. In recent years, Motherwell paintings have reached auction records up to $11 million.
