Description
A modern lithograph in colors on paper titled "The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui" by Richard Linder. Published in 1968. Hand signed in pencil with an annotation of 33/500. From a private collection. Dimensions: 34.5"h x 24.5"w x 1"d (framed). In very good condition.
A bold and theatrical composition, this limited edition lithograph captures the artist’s signature blend of figuration and abstraction with stylized, angular forms and saturated colors. The work portrays a sharply dressed figure in trench coat and hat—part gangster, part performer—set against a deep violet background. Combining elements of Pop Art, German Expressionism, and Surrealism, the piece reflects Lindner’s fascination with urban life, fashion, and the psychology of power. Created as a poster design for Bertolt Brecht’s play of the same name, this 1968 lithograph exemplifies Lindner’s graphic precision and vibrant palette.
Richard Linder (1901-1978) was an illustrator for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. His style blends together expressionism, surrealist fantasy, and cubism. Common subject matters are streetwalkers, circus women, and men in uniform. A re-occurring theme is Berlin's cabaret culture of the 1930s. As a fun fact, Richard Lindner appeared in the second row on The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover.
