Description

An original vintage 1960s patchwork credenza by Paul Evans. An example of Paul Evans’ iconic patchwork series, this monumental credenza showcases the sculptural craftsmanship and metalworking innovation that define Evans’ most sought-after work. Hand-constructed in the 1960s and commissioned in Detroit, the piece features Evans’ signature collage of copper, bronze, pewter, and enameled steel panels—each uniquely hand-torched, textured, and patinated to create a richly dimensional surface. The mosaic of metals is punctuated with welded seams and riveted detailing, emphasizing the artist’s blend of Brutalist form and refined artisanal technique.

The top is fitted with cleft slate panels, adding material contrast and grounding the dramatic composition. Four flush cabinet doors open to generous interior storage, while the stepped base contributes to the credenza’s architectural presence. With harmonious variations of color—from warm copper reds to deep bronzes and pewter accent—this work exemplifies Evans’ mastery of sculptural furniture design during his peak Creative Studio period.

A rare and collectible commission, this credenza represents a superb example of Paul Evans’ enduring contributions to American studio craft and 20th-century design.

PROVENANCE: From the private collection of Gilbert “Gil” Bridges, acclaimed American musician and longtime member of the band Rare Earth (1968–2021). Known for commissioning custom work from notable artists and craftspeople—from bespoke jewelry to stage attire—Bridges consistently sought out exceptional design. According to accounts from those close to him, this piece was likely commissioned during an extensive remodel of his Northland- area residence led by architect Ronnie Strasner, a close friend and later manager of Rare Earth. Created to fit the space precisely, the work reflects Bridges’ lifelong appreciation for unique, high-quality artistry and his connection to prominent creative figures throughout his career.
