Description

A contemporary pulp paper wall art with graphite by English artist Anthony Caro. Signed “Caro” bottom left corner. Circa 1980s. On verso it is noted “TINA” – possibly the title of the artwork. The artist created a series of sculptural artworks with handmade paper in the late 20th century. He is exploring the use of paper cut-outs, collage, and homemade paper as a sculptural art form. This artwork features 6 separate planes of paper with deckled edges. They are slightly layered to create a towering, pillar format. On the bottom of each paper are minimal graphite lines which becomes more prominent as the paper planes move from the top to the bottom. A curious exploration between 3-dimensional and 2-dimensional art. From a private collection. Dimensions: 40.5”h x 18.25”w x 1.5”d (framed). In excellent condition (glass on frame is cracked, see photo for reference). Sir Anthony Alfred Caro OM CBE (1924-2013) was an English abstract sculptor whose work is characterized by assemblages of metal using 'found' industrial objects. He began as a member of the modernist school, having worked with Henry Moore early in his career. He was lauded as the greatest British sculptor of his generation. The artist was enormously influential, and his work has been exhibited at institutions including Tate Britain, the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Seoul Museum of Art, the National Gallery in London, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. Caro’s sculptures have fetched seven figures on the secondary market.
