In very good condition. From a private collection.

"Zurich, Improvisation XXXII" showcases Davie’s signature improvisational style, blending bold gestural black lines with vivid overlays of red, pink, orange, yellow, and blue. The composition evokes both jazz-like rhythm and symbolic abstraction, hallmarks of Davie’s work, which often drew inspiration from music, myth, and non-Western art. An important example of Davie’s mid-1960s period, when his international reputation was firmly established.

Alan Davie (1920–2014) was one of Scotland’s most internationally acclaimed postwar artists, celebrated for his bold, improvisational paintings and prints that fused abstraction with symbolic imagery. Trained at Edinburgh College of Art, Davie emerged in the 1950s as one of the first British artists to gain recognition for gestural abstraction, often compared to American Abstract Expressionists though rooted in his own influences of jazz, literature, and non-Western art. Davie represented Britain at the Venice Biennale (1964) and was the subject of major retrospectives at institutions including the Tate Gallery, London (1971) and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. His works are held in prestigious collections worldwide, including the Tate Modern, London; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh. Knighted in 1972 for his contributions to art, Davie remains a central figure in postwar European abstraction.
