A postmodern oil painting on canvas by Detroit artist Nancy Mitchnick. Signed and dated 1980 on verso. An expressive still life depicting a bowler hat, vase of flowers, and a tiger among bright shapes and patterns. Per the artist, 'My lexicography is made up of shape, color, and space, there is paint of course, and motion as well as stillness, and the evolution of my knowledge from looking for simplicity and relationships and feeling the light, and living, as well as observing, the world." A group show in 1980 at the Detroit Institute of Arts called "Kick Out the Jams" gave Mitchnick national attention with a write-up in Artforum. This painting was created in the same year of the exhibition. Critic and curator Ruth Rattner wrote of the emerging "Detroit style" coming from this group show: "an energetic handling of materials that emphasizes their physical qualities. We recognize it in the thick stripes of pigment in Nancy Mitchnick’s portraits..." From a private collection. Dimensions: 60.75"h x 60.75" wide x 2"d. In very good vintage condition.
Nancy Mitchnick (1947- ) is an American painter and educator. She most notably started as part of Detroit's Cass Corridor Group. She received a BFA from Wayne State University; after working as curatorial assistant at the Detroit Institute of Arts, she did graduate studies at Wayne State. In 1973, Mitchnick moved to New York City where she was a taxi-driver, professor, and artist. Most recently, Mitchnick relocated to Detroit. In 2016, she had a solo show at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit called "Uncalibrated." Mitchnick has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Pollock Krasner Foundation grant and a National Endowment for the Arts award.

In most cases parcels are shipped out in 1-3 days and delivered in 3-5 days. Freight deliveries can take anywhere from 1-10 weeks depending on location. We have freight shipments delivered to the East Coast every 1-2 weeks, and to the West Coast every 3- 5 weeks. All delivery dates provided by us are estimates, and all freight deliveries are fulfilled by third party companies. The shipping company we book your delivery with will contact you directly to schedule delivery.
While damage in transit is rare, if you receive a damaged item, please retain all packing materials and notify us as soon as possible. We would be happy to facilitate an insurance claim to reimburse you for the cost of repair; or to accept a return for a full refund.
