Description

A striking mixed-media sculpture by Damian Priour exemplifies postmodern experimentation through the interplay of transparency, color, and raw architectural form. This sculpture was custom made for a private collector in the 1990s. A vertically oriented art glass panel anchors the composition, featuring fluid, abstract bands of blue, teal, and violet that appear suspended within the glass, culminating in a circular pooled form near the base. The luminous glass element is framed and supported by roughly hewn limestone blocks, their porous, tactile surfaces providing a deliberate contrast to the smooth, polished glass. Set atop a limestone base, the sculpture balances organic irregularity with geometric structure, evoking both architectural and natural references. Priour’s use of stone and glass highlights a dialogue between fragility and permanence, refinement and earthiness—hallmarks of postmodern sculptural design from the late 20th century. A compelling custom work that functions as both sculptural object and spatial accent, well-suited for collectors of contemporary studio glass, postmodern design, or mixed-media sculpture. From a private collection. Dimensions: 26.5"h 10"w x 13.5"d. In very good condition.

Damian Priour (1949–2014) was a highly regarded sculptor and glass artist celebrated for his contributions to contemporary art and cultural philanthropy, particularly in Texas. Priour was named the Texas Commission on the Arts’ State Three-Dimensional Artist in 2008 and was inducted into the Austin Arts Hall of Fame in 2009, reflecting both his artistic excellence and civic impact. Beyond his studio practice, Priour played a significant role in the arts community, serving on the boards of the Austin Museum of Art, Ballet Austin, and the Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum, and co-founding the Austin Visual Arts Association. His acclaimed Texas Chair Project, later expanded into the Global Chair Project, brought together artists worldwide to support cultural, environmental, and health-related causes. Priour’s work is held in major public and corporate collections, including the Corning Museum of Glass, the Austin Museum of Art, and numerous public art collections across Texas, underscoring his lasting artistic and philanthropic legacy.
