Description

An intriguing modern Op Art serigraph titled "Togonne" by Hungarian-French artist Victor Vasarely. Published in 1987. Hand signed in pencil on the bottom right with an annotation of 232/300 on the bottom left. A pattern of circles in a geometric shape create an interesting optical illusion. Artists in the 1960s drew on recent advances in the science of visual perception to create optical illusions in their art, contributing to a movement called Op Art. Artworks from this movement are iconic and make a powerful statement in a modern or contemporary designed space. Note, this piece is hung horizontally, but the signature and numbering indicates it was originally meant to be vertical. Dimensions: 37.25"h x 46.25"w x 1.5"d (framed). In very good condition.

Victor Vasarely (1906-1997) was an artist credited as the grandfather and leader of the Op Art movement. Utilizing geometric shapes and colorful graphics, the artist created compelling illusions of spatial depth, as seen in his work Vega-Nor (1969). Vasarely’s method of painting borrowed from a range of influences, including Bauhaus design principles, Wassily Kandinsky, and Constructivism. Vasarely worked in advertising agencies to support himself as a graphic artist while creating many works including Zebra (1937), which is considered by some to be one of the earliest examples of Op Art. His works are presently held in the collections of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Tate Gallery in London, and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice. In 2019, a temporary exhibition of Vasarely's work entitled Le Partage des Formes was displayed in the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.
