A lithograph on paper titled “Elegy Sketch” by Robert Motherwell. Hand signed in pencil on the upper left corner with an annotation of 31/35. Published by Brooke Alexander, Inc., New York, and printed by the artist in Greenwich, Connecticut in 1977. From Motherwell’s Elegy series. The composition presents a horizontal format with loosely rendered vertical and oval forms contained within a rectangular field. The imagery relates to the artist’s long-running Elegies to the Spanish Republic, a theme he developed over several decades. This work connects directly to one of Motherwell’s most recognized series and represents a limited edition example issued during the later period of his career.Provenance: From a private estate in Birmingham, MI; originally acquired from Gump’s Gallery in San Francisco, California. Dimensions: 11.75”h x 26”w x 1.5”d (framed). Overall good condition. The sheet shows slight, even yellowing consistent with age. No other significant condition issues observed. Full condition reports available upon request.Robert Motherwell (1915–1991) was a leading member of the New York School and one of the youngest artists associated with Abstract Expressionism. Over the course of his career, he worked in painting, printmaking, and collage, and was also an influential writer and editor on modern art theory. Motherwell represented the United States at the Venice Biennale and received numerous honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship. In 1983, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts. His work has been the subject of major retrospectives, including at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and is held in prominent museum collections worldwide.

We ship world-wide and quote through USPS, FedEx, UPS, DHL, GPX, and with multiple domestic and international freight shipping companies to get you the best price on delivery, and we offer free pick-up for anyone who wants to handle their own delivery. In most cases parcels are shipped out in 1-3 days and delivered in 3-5 days. Freight deliveries can take anywhere from 1-10 weeks depending on location. We have freight shipments delivered to the East Coast every 1-2 weeks, and to the West Coast every 3- 5 weeks. All delivery dates provided by us are estimates, and all freight deliveries are fulfilled by third party companies. The shipping company we book your delivery with will contact you directly to schedule delivery. While damage in transit is rare, if you receive a damaged item, please retain all packing materials and notify us as soon as possible. We would be happy to facilitate an insurance claim to reimburse you for the cost of repair; or to accept a return for a full refund.
