Description

A contemporary cast paper relief artwork titled "La Jouer Secret" by Frank Gallo. Hand signed in pencil on the bottom right with an annotation of 94/200 on the bottom left. Published in 1981. A romantic composition depicting a female profile with wisping hair. The embossing technique creates an ethereal feeling as if the figure is emerging from the paper. Artworks on paper are known for being 2-dimensional yet Gallo was able to bring a sculptural perspective to the traditions of paper. From a private collection. Dimensions: 55"h x 44"w x 4.75"d (framed). In very good vintage condition. 

Frank Gallo (1933-2019) graduated from the University of Toledo and received his M.F.A. from the State University of Iowa. During the mid 1950s he studied further at Cranbrook Academy and worked with printmaker Mauricio Lasansky. A sculptor who teaches at the University of Illinois at Urbana, Gallo worked for many years in epoxy resin and received wide critical acclaim, especially for his figures of women, when his work was exhibited in the 1968 Venice Biennale. Examples of his work are in the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C. and the Los Angeles County Art Museum. Museum exhibitions include, The Whitney Museum of American Art Annuals 1964-1967 and Young America, 1965; Alliance on Art, Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC 1968; Venice Biennale, 1968; Works on Paper, Art Institute of Chicago, 1978; and Frank Gallo Retrospective, Paine Art Center, Oshkosh WI, 1983. Awards include: Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship.
