A contemporary oil painting on canvas titled “Lazy Afternoon” by American artist Harry McCormick. Hand signed in red bottom right. Circa 1980s. The composition depicts a solitary female figure on a sectional in contemporary yet ornate stylized room. She is lying face down with her strawberry blonde hair covering her face. Her legs are swung up and crossed in the air which highlights her trendy platform shoes. Sunlight from the left illuminates the dark space – a lovely evocation of light and shadow. McCormick takes inspiration from the American Realist painters at the turn of the 20th century such as Edward Hopper, John Sloan, and George Bellows. From a private collection in Metro Detroit who acquired the painting from Garelick’s Gallery. Original gallery tag on verso. Dimensions: 29.5”h x 35.5”w x 2.5”d (framed). In very good vintage condition.
Harry McCormick (1942- ) is a contemporary American painter noted for his closely observed renderings of shadow, light, and reflections in interior spaces. His paintings often capture one or two solitary individuals in moments of introspection. His work can be found in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum and Guggenheim Museum in New York; the Birmingham Museum of Art in Alabama; the Boca Raton Museum of Art in Florida; the Newark Museum in New Jersey; the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.; the Delaware Museum of Art in Wilmington, and the Vatican Collection in Rome, Italy, among others.
