Description
A contemporary mixed-media pastel and charcoal drawing on paper from the "Tornado Series" by Detroit artist Gilda Snowden. Hand signed on the lower right and dated 1989. From a private collection; acquired directly from the artist. Dimensions: 46.25"h x 34"w x 1.5"d (framed). In very good condition.
This drawing showcases Gilda Snowden's signature expressive abstraction. Executed in bold strokes of charcoal and layered with vibrant pastel, the composition swirls with kinetic energy, forming a vortex-like structure that dominates the paper. The interplay of earthy rust tones with flashes of golden yellow and deep black creates both tension and rhythm, exemplifying Snowden's ability to channel emotional intensity through gestural mark-making. This work reflects Snowden's celebrated exploration of personal narrative, memory, and cultural identity through abstraction, firmly situating her within the lineage of influential Detroit artists of the late 20th century.
