Description
A fine impression of plate 63 from Francisco Goya's groundbreaking satirical series "Los Caprichos (The Caprices)", first published in 1799. This edition, dated 1868 on the verso label, represents the third edition of the celebrated suite. The work, titled "Miren que grabes! (Look how serious they are!)", depicts donkey-headed figures in human form - a biting satire of arrogance, authority, and the follies of societal pretensions. Through his masterful command of etching and aquatint, Goya infuses the grotesque scene with both humor and menace, underscoring his enduring critique of human vice and hypocrisy. Los Caprichos remains one of Goya's most influential works, widely studied for its innovative printmaking and fearless social commentary. Impressions from the early editions, such as this, are highly collectible and continue to resonate for their bold modernity. From a private collection. Dimensions: 13"h x 10"w x .25"d (framed). In very good condition. Full condition reports are available upon request.
Francisco Goya (1746-1828) is regarded as one of Spain's greatest painters and printmakers, often called the "Father of Modern Art." Court painter to Charles III and Charles IV, he received prestigious royal commissions, including portraits of the Spanish monarchy and aristocracy. His print series, including Los Caprichos (1799), Los Desastres de la Guerra (1810-20), and Los Disparates (1815-23), are celebrated for their technical mastery and profound social critique. Goya's works are represented in the world's leading institutions, including the Museo del Prado, Madrid; the Louvre, Paris; and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. His innovations in painting and printmaking profoundly influenced artists from Delacroix and Manet to Picasso and the Surrealists.
