Description

A modernist oil painting on canvas titled "The Letter" by Michigan artist Mae C. Averill. Signed bottom right. Exhibited in 1952 for the "Kirk-in-the-Hills Outdoor Art Festival." Original tag from exhibition on verso. The painting depicts a young woman classically dressed and she is posed at the mailbox holding a letter. It appears as if she just opened the letter and is in deep contemplation after reading the contents. The overall composition is a sunny and bright yet there is a sense of melancholy when studying the woman's expression. An interesting juxtaposition. Mae C. Averill participated in various art events during the mid-20th century including the "Michigan Artist's Exhibition" at the Detroit Institute of Arts. From a private collection. Dimensions: 28.25"h x 24.25"w x 1.5"d (framed). In very good vintage condition.
