Description

A modern abstraction watercolor on paper titled "Honolulu (1979)" by California artist Billy Al Bengston. Hand signed, titled, and dated 1979 on the lower right. Original artist gallery tag on verso. From a private collection; acquired directly from the artist. Dimensions: 33.25"h x 26.25"w x 1.25"d (framed). In very good condition.

The composition showcases his distinctive blending of hard-edge forms with atmospheric washes. Features a luminous blue sky intersected by a radiant rainbow, offset by bold blocks of black and turquoise. Silhouettes of tropical foliage and floral motifs in red and white punctuate the scene, evoking both natural beauty and graphic intensity. Bengston’s use of vivid color and layered transparency highlights his connection to the California "Finish Fetish" movement while reflecting a more playful, painterly sensibility. This work exemplifies Bengston’s exploration of light, color, and modern abstraction.

Billy Al Bengston (1934–2022) was a leading figure in the Los Angeles art scene and a central member of the “Ferus Gallery Group,” alongside artists like Ed Ruscha and Ed Kienholz. Known for blending hard-edge abstraction with vibrant color and West Coast cool, he became associated with the California “Finish Fetish” movement. Bengston’s work has been exhibited widely, including solo shows at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (1968) and the San Francisco Museum of Art (1968), and is held in major collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and the Tate, London. Celebrated for his innovative use of automotive lacquer and iconic motifs like chevrons and flowers, Bengston secured his place as one of the most influential postwar West Coast artists.
