Billy Al Bengston (1934–2022) was a leading figure in the Los Angeles art scene and a central member of the “Ferus Gallery Group,” alongside artists like Ed Ruscha and Ed Kienholz. Known for blending hard-edge abstraction with vibrant color and West Coast cool, he became associated with the California “Finish Fetish” movement. Bengston’s work has been exhibited widely, including solo shows at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (1968) and the San Francisco Museum of Art (1968), and is held in major collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and the Tate, London. Celebrated for his innovative use of automotive lacquer and iconic motifs like chevrons and flowers, Bengston secured his place as one of the most influential postwar West Coast artists.
