Le Shoppe Modern in Collaboration with Cranbrook Academy of Art Presents “The Art of Robert Cremean: An Artist’s Legacy”

“Works of art exist in spherical time and are always contemporary. They exist as transparencies through which we may glimpse that parallel reality. Art happens when we see through a work of art. It doesn’t matter when the work was made.” – Robert Cremean

Robert Cremean’s artwork has been widely exhibited nationally and internationally, and he represented the United States at the Venice Biennale 34.

Cremean attended Cranbrook Academy of Art from 1954-1956 where he pursued both his B.F.A. and M.F.A. He received the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship in 1954 to study in Italy. Following graduation, he was selected to participate in numerous solo exhibitions in esteemed institutions across the United States and internationally.

In December 1964, the art critic William Wilson stated the following about Robert Cremean at the Esther Robles Gallery:

“Late sculpture continues to reflect Cremean’s refined intellectuality, sensuousness and nostalgia. Cremean is not making the past, he is using it. His statements become psychological. Figures twist within their stable envelopes, we are tense. And yet, trapped as they are, often presenting us their still, symmetrical view as primary, they remain passive. Their passivity is heightened by their slowly worked surfaces. Naturally they are esthetically finished, but in a state of incompletion. They are attentive of the sculptor’s caress. The artist does not let go of his creations; we are made constantly aware of his very particular personality.”

Robert Cremean was an artist who did not create for the dealer or the gallery but rather used his art as a vessel to explore his own psychological journey. Robert Cremean’s artworks are represented in various prestigious collections including the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, Michigan, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, California, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia, National Collection of Fine Arts, Washington, D. C., Fresno Art Museum, Fresno, California, and Cranbrook Museum, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

The Robert Cremean exhibition is a partnership between Cranbrook Academy of Art, Le Shoppe Modern, Detroit Fine Art Appraisals, and bG Gallery.

The exhibition will be held at Le Shoppe Modern, Metro Detroit’s largest iconic 20th century furniture and fine art showroom. Deboran Slobin, co-owner of Le Shoppe Modern said, “We here at Le Shoppe Modern are both honored and excited to be hosting this artist’s amazing work, and to share Robert Cremean’s passion and vision with a whole new audience.”

Terri Stearn, owner of Detroit Fine Appraisals and co-owner of Le Shoppe Auction House, expressed, “The art of Robert Cremean is unlike anything you’ve seen before. It does what all good art should do, which is to inspire curiosity and wonder where everyone will have a different understanding or interpretation of what art is meant to convey. The artworks are conversation pieces.” Le Shoppe Modern’s on-site appraiser and art consultant, Trista Maltby, further emphasized, “Robert Cremean’s artworks attracted prominent museum curators. The artist has connections to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Detroit Institute of Arts, and even museums abroad such as The National Gallery of Art in Australia. During his lifetime it was rare for Cremean to sell his art, so this exhibition presents an exciting opportunity for private collectors.”

In addition to the exhibition at Le Shoppe Modern, a selection of Robert Cremean’s artworks will be exhibited at bG Gallery in Santa Monica, California. bG Gallery specializes in accomplished artists who have crossed traditionally contentious art ideologies including expressive-conceptual, which correlates to Robert Cremean’s artistic legacy. “This nationwide gallery partnership to exhibit the works of Robert Cremean is something bG Gallery is very excited to be a part of, as it’s one of the few times this historically relevant artist has had works exhibited outside of a museum setting,” stated David Gorman, owner of bG Gallery. He continued to say, “We look forward to introducing original Cremean works to art collectors in the greater Los Angeles through bG Gallery.”

“The Art of Robert Cremean: An Artist’s Legacy” exhibition coincides with an endowment from the Cremean Estate to Cranbook Academy of Art. A silent auction will begin the opening night of the exhibition on October 17th and will run until the exhibition concludes on December 17th

Proceeds of the auction will support Cranbrook.

The exhibition opening is October 17th from 6:00-8:00pm.

Light refreshments will be served.
