Born in Rotterdam, he immigrated to the United States in 1926 and became a central presence in postwar American art. De Kooning received numerous honors during his lifetime, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964. He represented the United States at the Venice Biennale and was the subject of major retrospectives at institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. In 1986, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts.
