Drawing inspiration from Etruscan art and early Renaissance traditions, he developed a modern interpretation of classical themes that became central to postwar European art. Marini received significant international recognition during his lifetime. In 1952, he was awarded the Grand Prize for Sculpture at the Venice Biennale. Major retrospectives of his work were organized at institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Kunsthaus Zürich.
