He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lille before moving to Paris, where he became associated with Cubism and exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants and Salon d'Automne. Herbin was a founding member of the Abstraction-Création group in 1931 and later served as president of the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles. In 1946, he developed his alphabet plastique, a visual system connecting color, geometry, music, and language.
